Religion & Faith

The African American Church has throughout history played a crucial, multifaceted role in the development and sustenance of Black Communities in America. This fact is well illustrated in the story of East Austin’s past and present. The brief histories presented here will provide insight into the chronological development of East Austin’s most historic congregations as community religious institutions. The narratives will also shed light on the Church’s various related roles that help define and support the sense of place and cultural identity of the community. From the inception of Central East Austin’s African American community, in addition to being places of worship, churches have served as neighborhood social gathering places, social services organizations, incubators for political movements, educational facilities, political leadership academies, and neighborhood centers, just to name a few of their attributes.

Mount Zion Baptist Church

The first light was shed in 1873 in the minds with a group of organizers of this church and has spread with such force that it has become a light in the center of a hill that beckon men and women into its path. On the San Antonio Highway, in a little settlement called Williamson Creek, the Mt Zion Williamson Creek Baptist Church was born under the leadership of Reverend Jacob Fontaine. In 1883, a flood destroyed the church. Through the faith of our forerunners, services were held in homes.

Freedom Home Baptist Church

On August 15, 1982, Rev. Oscar B. Howard, Jr., being led by the Holy Spirit, organized Freedom Home Baptist Church in the home of Sister Mildred Medearis, with 35 members. In December 1982, we purchased a piece of property on Pecan Springs Road. God opened doors for us and we started holding services at the Springdale Gardens Day Care Center and then later at the Alpha Seventh Day Adventist Church. God made provisions for us to purchase property at 1144 ¾ Gunter Street, from the late Mr. J.D. Culp. God was blessing continuously.

Wesley United Methodist Church

As Austin’s oldest church, Wesley United Methodist Church has a proud history extending back to Reconstruction, 1865. Reverend Joseph Welch, presiding Elder of the Texas District of the Mississippi Mission Conference, presided over the first meeting in the basement of the Tenth Street M. E. Church, South on March 4 of that year. The structure that exists today at San Bernard and Hackberry streets was built in 1928 under the pastoral authority of Reverend Dr. W. L. Turner.

Holy Cross Catholic Church

In 1936, Reverend Francis R. Weber, C.S.C. gathered a local group of baptized and confirmed Catholics into the home of the William M. Tear’s family residence of 1203 E. 12th st. It was established as a Diocesan Parish that grew beyond the home within a few short months when a site had finally been obtained on which to build. Within the decade the Holy Cross Hospital and Catholic Schools were added to the grounds. Holy Cross has a proud history of strong community leadership with some of its nascent all the way to contemporary membership serving in Austin ISD as well as the NAACP.
