Ebenezer (Third) Baptist has its roots deep in Central East Austin--being born, named, and nurtured by Austin community members and Baptist leadership alike. In 1875 in the living room of original charter member Elisa Hawkins, its original following was named by Austinite Henrietta Willis and was then presided over by Reverend. C. Ward. The signature Gothic spire and main structure that stands today was built in 1950 and has remained not only in tact but expanded upon due to decades of strong community involvement and support.

The first charter members of the Ebenezer congregation met in 1875 in what is today the heart of Central East Austin: the home of Mrs. Elisa Hawkins at 1104 East Tenth Street. Under the leadership of Reverend C. Ward the small following grew to afford the construction of its first framed structure at Catalpa & Curve streets. Quickly this too was outgrown, and by 1885 the first bricks were laid at the corner of East Tenth and San Marcos. By 1915 a stucco spire was built atop the brick sanctuary. This and many other building-expansion projects were under the inspiration of Rev. Jerome E. Lott.

• Reverend Andrew Herbert, 1876-1883 

• Reverend Chester Anderson, 1884-1885 

• Reverend C. P. Hughes, 1886-1888 

• Reverend A. W. Moss, 1889-1891 

• Reverend Lee Lewis Campbell, 1892-1927 

• Reverend Jerome C. Lott, 1928-1949 

• Reverend Robert L. Rowe, 1949-1968 

• Reverend Robert R. Williams, 1968-1969

• Reverend Marvin C. Griffin, 1969 to present.
